OUR COACHING APPROACH

Land training and water training belong in the same conversation.

Why the winter program is one part of a paddler’s development—and how coached practice connects the pieces.

Sagwan Athletics · October 22, 2026

Start with a purpose

A workout is easier to understand when you know why it is there. At Sagwan Athletics, we connect the land program to the demands of paddling while keeping the two learning environments distinct.

The gym gives us a place to practise movement and develop physical preparation. The boat gives us feedback about connection, balance, timing, and how we work with other paddlers.

Keep technique in the conversation

Our coaching sequence is technique, endurance, strength and power, then speed. These are connected priorities, rather than separate boxes we finish and forget. Movement quality remains important throughout.

A stronger gym exercise does not automatically produce a better stroke. On-water practice is where a coach helps you connect your physical preparation to the paddle, the boat, and the crew.

Make the winter work useful

The winter program gives you a structure for home or gym sessions, movement guidance, training records, and review checkpoints. It is a starting framework for adult club dragon boat paddlers, with room for coach-led adjustments.

When paddling resumes, the conversation changes: what carries over, what needs adapting, and what the crew needs next. Your training records can inform that conversation; they cannot replace seeing you paddle.

One home for the whole picture

Sagwan Athletics is growing toward a connected coaching platform for land and water. Today, the winter program is available in the Training Hub. Future water-training tools and other paddle-discipline programs will be introduced when they are ready.
